The original Military & Police name dates back to 1899, when Smith & Wesson introduced a revolver that would go on to become one of the most widely issued service handguns of the 20th century.
 
While compact revolvers like the Model 36 offered five-round capacity, the 2-inch Model 10 answered demand for a concealable revolver that retained the reassuring six-round cylinder of the K-frame platform.
