Decision Trigger – Is this revolver for you?
✔️ Shoot at will if:
You want maximum barrel presence: The long 6-inch ventilated-rib Colt Python barrel gives the revolver an incredibly sleek, long-range target pistol silhouette.
You prefer a classic target grip feel: The "Square Butt" frame configuration provides a more substantial, traditional grip area that fills the palm perfectly for stable, two-handed aiming.
- You want consistent, efficient power: Utilizing Tanaka's Pegasus gas engine, gas is stored right inside the cylinder, delivering stable velocities and great gas efficiency across shots.
❌ Hold your fire if:
You intend to holster it easily: The combination of a 6-inch barrel and a full square butt frame makes this a very long wheelgun that will poke out of or snag on standard holsters.
You want to eject empty shell casings: To maintain its high gas efficiency and shot capacity, it uses a fixed internal drum cylinder rather than individual removable cartridges.
- You expect realistic recoil: Like all high-end Japanese fixed-gas revolvers, it channels 100% of its gas into pushing the BB forward, leaving the physical shooting experience completely recoil-free.
『Takeaway: The Tanaka Python Smolt 6-inch Square Butt Stainless is a gorgeous, elongated custom-shop hybrid. It trades individual shell realism and compact holstering for a stunning silver finish, a stable target-style grip, and an iconic 6-inch silhouette. If you are looking for something more handy, the 4" version is the better choice.』

About the Real Gun
In the 1970s, most Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum revolvers lacked a full underlug barrel. Meanwhile, Colt’s Python stood out with its heavy underlug, which reduced muzzle rise, and its strong rifling twist that enhanced bullet stability and accuracy. Although the Python offered exceptional smoothness in trigger pull, some shooters found it harder to predict the exact hammer break.
Competitive shooters and gunsmiths soon envisioned a hybrid that combined the strengths of both platforms—S&W’s crisp trigger control with the Python’s barrel performance. This concept gave birth to the custom “Smolt,” most famously crafted by California gunsmith Bill Davis. Early examples featuring an ejector rod tip lock are now rare collector’s pieces. Each Smolt was built to order, pairing an S&W K-frame with a Colt Python barrel of the customer’s chosen length.
About the Airsoft Version
Tanaka recreates this legendary custom concept with its Pegasus-style gas revolver “SMOLT” (formerly known in Japan as “Smythson”). This Tanaka Airsoft Python Smolt 6" Stainless Steel Finish Ver.3 Gas Revolver features a K-frame square butt configuration, responding to long-time fan demand.
Beyond the frame shape, it includes a wide hammer, wide trigger, and oversized grips for a strong vintage presence. The stainless-style finish is inspired by the M66, with matching treatment applied to the frame, barrel, hammer, and trigger for a cohesive appearance.
Built with heavyweight resin and zinc die-cast components, the Pegasus system integrates the gas mechanism within the cylinder for consistent performance and realistic handling.
Specifications such as weight may vary slightly depending on production batch.
